Sunrise seniors grab titles
The 5A Div-I and Div-II state high school swim meets concluded Saturday in Tempe following a number of notable performances by West Valley athletes.
Leading the way was Sunrise Mountain senior Marshall Dilworth who took home two individual state titles in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. He also helped teammates Thomas Wahlers, John Estfan and Wayne Smith to a second place showing in the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Overall the Mustangs took fifth on the boys side as a team in the 5A Div-II ranks.
Dilworth’s win in the 200-yard individual medley was his third straight state championship in the event.
Also winning from Sunrise Mountain was fellow senior Whitney Morgan who didn’t make a splash in the girls diving competition.
At Ironwood sophomore Skylar Wilson of the Eagles found the winner’s circle in the 50-yard freestyle, the second consecutive season she has won the event at the state level. She also took second in the 100-freestyle.
The top team finish on the girls side was turned in by Centennial, which took fourth in the 5A Div-II ranks.
