West Valley tennis squads net 2nd round matchup

In a contest pitting two of the top West Valley girls tennis teams, No. 3 Sunrise Mountain will play host to No. 6 seed Centennial Wednesday in the 5A Div. II state tournament.

The Mustangs (14-1), lead by junior Taylor Geiger, are coming off a 5-0 win against No. 14 seed Camelback Monday, while the Coyotes (12-2) downed No. 11 Pinnacle, 5-1.

In other Div. II action, No. 7 seed Deer Valley advanced with a 6-0 win against No. 10 Westview. The Skyhawks will travel to No. 2-seed Horizon Wednesday. No. 12 Ironwood was ousted in the first round by No. 5 seed North, 5-0.

The Mountain Ridge girls fell to Salpointe (5-0) in the 5A Div. I  tournament.

On the 5A Div. II boys side, Centennial moved on with a 5-2 win over No. 10 San Luis. The Coyotes (11-3) will travel to No. 2 seed North Wednesday for a second-round matchup.

Top-seeded Westview downed Sunrise Mountain, 5-2, and No. 12 Ironwood fell to No. 5 seed Ironwood Ridge, 5-2. And, in likely the day's closest match, No. 6 seed Marcos de Niza edged No. 11 Deer Valley, 5-4.

In 5A Div. I, Mountain Ridge was shut down by top-seeded Corona del Sol, 5-0.

All second-round matches start at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
